A Tactical Guide for Omaha Hi Lo

The numerous ways that one can win Omaha Hi Lo has led to a deluge of strategic guides on the Net. This is good, but also makes it difficult for a new player to decide which are actually effective.

Part of a winning Omaha Hi Lo strategy includes getting the right balance between highs and lows. Getting a hand like A,Q,2,3, suited or not, is a good starting hand. Possessing several connected lows or highs is also favorable, as it virtually guarantees that not only do you have half the prize, but also the flop will give you more options and flexibility.

You will often read that a good Omaha Hi Lo strategy means playing it as tight as possible, and that is to a large extent true. However, if you have a strong hand, a viable option is slow playing. This again underscores part of the difference between Omaha and games like No Limit Holdem, where slow playing is almost always risky.

The necessity to form straight highs and lows makes it difficult to play middle cards, and it is advisable that if you get these as your starting hand, then you should consider folding.

Of course, your Omaha Hi Lo strategies are only as good as long as your opponent cannot read you. Try not to get too excited if you get an AA34, as the others will likely fold before the pot has a chance to increase. At the same time, you should endeavor to read and observe the players on the table.

As in any other Poker game, there are player types that you will recognize in Omaha, be it the fish, tourist, maniac or tight player. You should make it a point to adjust your Omaha playing style to suit these opponents. Doing so can help you extract more money from these players, as they often commit mistakes.

These same tactics can also be used when playing the game online. Here it is even easier to watch the way other players play. Land based or online, take notes, and see how the others are doing it right or wrongly.

By including this in your Omaha Hi Lo strategy, you can simply let them add money to the pot. All too often new players are unable to see mistakes committed by others, letting opportunities pass them by.

Finally, once you begin to win, you cannot afford to get complacent. Always be on the lookout for new Omaha Hi Lo tactics to help improve your skills and you will win more money and games.
